ACM-W Women in Computing Celebration 2021

Embrace Change & Achieve Success

About Us

Kentucky Community College Women in Computing (KYCCWIC) is a regional ACM-W Celebration of Women in Computing. KYCCWIC connects technical women who are working/studying in Kentucky. This conference gives women an opportunity to learn from leaders in various technical fields. The goal of the conference will concentrate on building relationships, preparing women for the future in technical fields, and celebrating women in computing. The 2021 conference will focus on computer security, computer programming, data analytics, and employment.

This Year's Theme: Embrace Change & Achieve Success

How fitting is this theme to explain the last year? Navigating the covid-19 pandemic has forced us all to face unprecedented challenges. We changed the way we work, educate, parent, and entertain. As our work went virtual, we were forced to embrace new technologies. As our kids came home from school, we were forced to educate them while juggling our own careers and trying to maintain sanity. We held virtual birthday parties and happy hours to stay in touch with loved ones. For so many, these changes weren’t welcome or perfectly executed. But, it’s obvious that we somehow were able to embrace the situation and make it work. As we start returning to normal, it’s becoming clear that all our efforts were not wasted. We will no doubt continue to use many of the processes put into place as we navigate the new normal. It’s often said that change is inevitable, yet growth is optional. We should be proud of our growth through unprecedented change. We faced the challenge head on and our lives will be richer and more efficient for it. Let’s take that momentum and continue to grow through whatever changes come our way.

History of KYCCWIC

The Grace Hopper Celebration (GHC) of Women in Computing was founded in 1994, and is designed to bring the research and career interest of women in computing to the forefront. It is produced annually by the Anita Borg Institute and presented in partnership with the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM). It is the world’s largest technical conference for women in computing.

Smaller regional GHC events are held annually to support women within a local geographic area. The KY Community Colleges – Women in Computing (KYCC-WiC) Regional Celebration is the first GHC designed explicitly for women in community colleges.

The first event was held in 2013. Even years are sponsored by Kentucky Universities.
